Kodachrome film is dead. All of these horses are now dead. It’s possible all of the actors are dead. Same for the camera crew and the director. Wild West plots with red-lipsticked-perfectly-curled-platinum-blond-cowgirls and bandanna-masked-bad-guys are dead. The photographer is probably dead too. We don’t know who took these pictures. 20 slides among 300 bought in a Southern California thrift store. They are technically proficient. Expertly composed and correctly exposed. They capture a desert location shoot for an unknown movie filmed sometime in the 1960s. Nostalgia and the photographer’s skill make them easy to look at although they portray movie making as tiresome. All of the expressions are of dusty folks ready to move on. It might be a mistake to give these images their own exhibition, but this is a bathroom so it’s probably alright. No better place to contemplate the demise of the West than in the can.
